IW 2026 Themes

The International Workshop (IW) 2026 offers two primary workshops along with numerous smaller interactive activities designed to explore how systems engineering (SE) can be used to address challenges in systems development.

A Systems Approach-Driven Application of AI and Autonomy

This workshop explores how to apply systems engineering concepts and new technology to resolve a challenging real-world problem. The workshop will use an example scenario (Project Wildfire) and the Emergency Management Process (EMP) in a transdisciplinary working session. The focus will be on exploring SE challenges and approaches for Artificial Intelligence (AI) and autonomous systems in high-stakes, socio-technical contexts.

Attendees will:

  •   Identify SE attributes and implications of each EMP phase.
  •   Explore the potential role of AI and autonomy.
  •   Surface the SE challenges introduced by AI/autonomy in these contexts.
  •   Discuss how different SE approaches and capabilities can address these challenges.
  •   Produce tangible outputs that will directly inform Project Wildfire, as well as future INCOSE working group activities and technical products.

Towards Continuous Integration

This workshop addresses the many challenges associated with late discoveries during system integration and explores methods to enable earlier, continuous system integration.

Attendees will hear from industry leaders and systems engineers from diverse backgrounds. Through an interactive workshop setting, they will explore the various SE methods, modeling, tools, and approaches that can deliver integration capabilities much sooner and sustain them throughout the system lifecycle. This session will also specifically explore how model-based systems engineering (MBSE) approaches enable early and continuous integration.

INCOSE's International Workshop is the event of the year for systems engineers to contribute to their industry.

Attendees spend four focused days working alongside fellow systems engineers who are there to make a difference. Unlike INCOSE's annual International Symposium and other conferences, there are no paper, panel, or tutorial presentations. Systems Engineers at all levels and from all backgrounds are encouraged to engage in working sessions, and contribute their knowledge and experience to take the discipline forward.

Sessions are encouraged to inclusively engage multiple working groups, diverse practitioners, and multiple competency levels as they complete meeting outcomes, satisfying the session’s purpose. Attendees should experience a different yet complementary experience to regular working group meetings throughout the year.
